Project Description
Artist Statement/Bio: I started wood carving a few years ago as a way to decompress in the evenings after work. In 2019 I started carving Wood Spirits. My first ones were laughable caricatures, but with some perseverance they have steadily improved. It’s become really enjoyable to start with a piece of wood and a knife and discover who has been hiding inside. In 2019 and 2020, I started collecting samples of trees and shrubs from various rangeland sites around Idaho and carving my Spirits of the Range. Here are a few of my favorites. I never considered myself to be artistically talented, but the steady progression has shown me that even art can be a learned skill. My next challenge is to learn how to carve more than old white guys!
